Wow what a bad week for The USC Trojans...

On Monday we hear that the school, not the NCAA mind you, the school itself was disciplining the USC Mens Basketball team for infractions that occurred during  O.J. Mayo's one year at USC.

Now while this all stank of USC throwing the basketball team under the bus for the sake of attempting to rescue the football program you have to give credit to the basketball team and coach Kevin O'Neil for never admitting that publicly.

But you have to admit that it does suck for someone like point guard Mike Gerrity who all of a sudden had turned what was supposed to be a down year for the Trojans basketball team into what was starting to look like more and more of what was looking like another run at the pac-10 title and an NCAA tourney bid.

But all those hopes were squashed in an instant and now Mike Gerrity will never get a chance to play in the NCAA tournament as he is a 5th year senior...

But as bad as the news was for the USC basketball team I have to think it pales in comparison to what is happening to the USC Trojans football team...

First off today Joe McKnight announces that he's bailing to the NFL...

Aaron Corp announces that he's transferring to the University of Richmond...

And now there's all kind of speculation that Pete Carroll is heading to the NFL's Seattle Seahawks who today fired their head coach Jim Mora...

Although he hasn't announced it you have to believe that Pete Carroll is headed to the NFL. A few reasons why Pete Carroll is headed to the Seattle Seahawks:

  • USC has traditionally been stacked with running backs but they've been losing a lot to the NFL lately and this year they're losing Joe McKnight and Stefan Johnson (their No.'s 1 and 2 this past season before Johnson got injured) to the NFL and that may be hard to overcome considering their young and still developing QB.
  • Towards the end of this season and leading up to the Emerald Bowl Pete Carroll started making comments that leads me to believe that he wasn't sold on his freshman QB Matt Barkley and to compound that notion...
  • Today we hear that the perfectly capable but probably frustrated back up QB Aaron Corp is also leaving via transfer to the University of Richmond
  • The way the defense was exposed this past season and with senior Taylor Mays leaving to the NFL the defense is definitely a work in progress
  • That and of course there's that whole deal with the NCAA and the Feds looking into allegations regarding Reggie Bush that may leave USC with some sanctions placed on the football team.

Call it the perfect storm, call it whatever you want but the fact of the matter is Pete Carroll is most likely moving to the NFL.

It's been a good run with Pete Carroll bringing respectability back to this USC football team but I have to ask... Is it over?
